Relaxing activities and treatments, Eco-friendly practises, Picturesque surroundings

Awaken your senses nestled in a spectacular corner of Tuscany. Surrounded by vineyards, olive groves and cypress trees, this historical eco-sustainable estate is dedicated to wellbeing and the art of hospitality. Il Borro, once the retreat home belonging to Duke Amedeo of Savoy-Aosta, with a history dating back to 1254 is now owned by Ferruccio Ferragamo.

Every alley, every stone speaks of a time filled with flavours and scents that bring memories of a rare and authentic Tuscany to mind. The philological restoration that Mr Ferragamo started in 1993 brought this magnificent property back to splendour while preserving its traditions and history and underpinned by ethical principles such as the use of local labour and respect for the environment by making eco-sustainable choices. Renewable energy, the use of natural fertilizers and no pesticides for its vineyards, olive grove and gardens as well as beekeeping are among several other practices oriented towards sustainability and respect for the environment.

Balance Holidays is the exclusive wellbeing partner of Il Borro and we are pleased to introduce you to an enriching retreat programme where this memorable and tranquil destination is part of the experience itself.

Mornings are designed to wake up gently but energetically through a combination of workout activities and dynamic Odaka flow yoga. Yoga will be practiced outdoors facing the breath-taking landscapes of nature and the medieval village. The aim of this practice is to dissolve physical, mental, emotional tensions and ease the mind. Muscles are invited to engage in a new way, which strengthens them and creates movement in the mind. When the connective tissue is tense, muscles are no longer able to move freely, nor can our mind. Each pose creates space for dialogue with our deepest fears and the chance to overcome them.

Enjoy a spread of colour exploring the Tuscan countryside on a dynamic mountain bike excursion. Late summer marks the beginning of the truffle hunt season. Discover the ancient skills of truffle hunting, a noble gift of Mother Nature. A tasting will follow after the hunt.

Learn to choose fresh, seasonal and relevant ingredients. An expert chef will then demonstrate how to apply these ingredients into traditional Tuscan cooking concepts to create plates of authentic delight.

The wholesome, flavourful dishes of your meals will come from the onsite organic gardens of Il Borro where freshness and seasonal ingredients are the protagonists.

Afternoons and evenings are dedicated to slower Yin Yoga practices, which work on energetic meridians to release emotional and physical pain. During free time, rest by the pool or at the spa. The programme includes an exclusive detox massage and spa treatment specially designed for Balance Holidays’ guests, utilising the extra virgin olive oil produced by the estate. It also includes two dedicated mindfulness workshops and a creative painting workshop in the Medieval village. A horseback ride around the property’s bridges and streams during sunset will conclude this unique experience.

The Expert

Melania De Masi

Melania is an enthusiastic Odaka yoga teacher with a contemporary and innovative style that is popular in Japan and incorporates martial arts, Zen and traditional yoga postures. She trained directly under its founder and holds a diploma in Odaka Yoga, Yoga Therapy and Hatha Yoga/Yin Yoga. The concept of her practice is “Live Centered, Liquefy Your Limits, Embrace The Power,” which finds inspiration by observing the movement of the ocean and its waves. This beautiful flowing yoga style allows living centered in the middle of chaos. During Melania's classes, students are encouraged to pay attention to their bodies, keeping eyes open rather than closed to remain conscious of the outside world. She calls her classes an instrument to live a real life, a dynamic mediation rather than isolation. Her goal is to allow her students to discover the potential hidden within and unlock it, helping them realise that once they lift the self-imposed image, transformation happens.

Suspended in time, this corner of Tuscany is a timeless treasure. The inescapable first impression of the 700-hectare estate is nestled in the authentic, unspoilt beauty of nature in the heart of Tuscany, tucked between Florence, Siena and Cortona. Carrying a notable history dating back to 1254, the property is now owned by the Ferragamo family and has since been restored to embody battle wounds of the past, the freshness of the present and a pensive curiosity of the future.

Borro in Tuscan dialect refers to a chasm and was originally a fortress built as part of a strategy to defend against invaders crossing the two Roman roads, Clodia and Cassia.

Known to be the most historic and sumptuous of all properties in Tuscany, Il Borro is an inviting stay for guests to step into an authentic medieval space to exchange technological proliferation and distractions for disconnectedness, relaxation and internal peace.
